Terrorism is a global threat. As a European country, Austria will pose a higher risk of terrorism for its travellers. The danger arises because of the current conflict in Iraq and Syria. Terrorists have targeted some recreational places, airports, public transportation stations, and other places popular to travellers in European cities, such as Vienna. For instance, in November 2020, four people were killed in a terrorist attack in Vienna. This urges visitors always to be alert regarding their safety, as an attack could occur at any time.
As a smart traveller, some ways can be used to prevent the danger of terrorist attacks. The most important thing to do is always be aware of our surroundings, especially in popular spots that may become terrorist targets. Other than that, we, as travellers, should constantly monitor the media for updates regarding safety risks in the area. We should always report to the police whenever we see suspicious behaviour, for example, when there is an unattended bag. Whenever there is an official warning and advice from the local authorities, we should always take it seriously.
I would propose some strategies to do when there is a risk of a terrorist attack. If we ever come to a place where there is an occurring terrorist attack, we have to leave the spot as soon as possible if it is safe. We must also avoid coming back to the area to prevent ourselves from getting stuck in a secondary attack. Making a personalized plan with other travel members, for example, by meeting in the home country's embassy whenever there is an attack or other risks, could also be helpful.
